This course is intended for complete beginners or for those who ‘did French at school’ but may have been put off for some reason or have ‘forgotten’ everything and need to start again. Being able to communicate in day to day situations helps us to integrate with and feel a part of daily life in France. This course aims to help participants to begin to do just that.
Who will benefit from this class?
This class would suit you if you are completely new to French or you need to make a fresh start by going back to the basics of French at an absolute beginner level.
How will the course be structured and led!
The course is a one year course divided into 3 terms of around 8 weeks per term for a maximum of 12 participants. Each term will consist of two, themed 4-week blocks of classes. Each block will be lead by one or other of the two course leaders. Conducted in English, the course will focus on developing the key language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in basic French for practical everyday situations. Classes will be designed around the content of tried and tested Collins text books, which participants will need to invest in. The Collins learning materials will be extended by the tutors to make sure the learning needs of participants are met. Each class will have a similar format with tutor input, lots of practical exercises, reinforcement of previous learning and practice tasks to carry out between classes. There will be an emphasis on working and learning together so that a supportive and fun group atmosphere is built.
What will you get from this course?
This absolute beginner’s course will give you:
• key vocabulary, useful phrases and sentences that you will need to get by in the sorts of everyday scenarios and situations that you are likely to encounter living in France.
• the basic grammar essential to put together simple sentences in French.
• help with the pronunciation needed to ensure you will be understood.
• reinforcement of your learning at every step.
• suggestions about ways to practice what you have begun to learn and on how to build your language skills in between classes.
Above all the course will give you the confidence to ‘have a go’ and communicate in different everyday situations, get things done, extend your contacts and build friendships within the local French community.
Who leads this class?
This programme will be designed and lead by Jenny West and Christine Walter who are both experienced language tutors and understand what it means and what it takes to learn French as an adult.
Christine Walter is a qualified teacher, who has taught beginner French to a wide variety of age groups, from 4 year olds upwards. She has had a lifelong love affair with France dating from her first visit at the age of 14, and finds it impossible to give up teaching.
Jenny West is a qualified teacher of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and has had a long career in education and in the training of adults. She is very aware of the challenges we face as adults learning a language from scratch. Jenny fell in love with French aged ten and France aged 15 and has lived in France for eleven years.
